At Treiber Dermatology, Dr. Eric Treiber treats patients with many different forms of acne. Acne is one of the most common skin issues, for men and women of any age. It is caused by a number of factors, some more easier treated than others. However, the most difficult form of acne to treat is hormonal acne. Hormones are present in all of us, they are responsible for many of our biological processes. The same hormones that help us to grow and prosper as we age however, are also responsible for acne and other skin conditions. Hormonal acne often occurs as a result of an imbalance in hormone levels, leading to an overproduction of facial oils known as sebum.
Hormonal acne almost always begins during puberty or pregnancy a time where hormones are peaking. It mainly appears near cheekbones, jawlines, and the chin area. And unlike most other forms of acne hormonal acne cannot be treated through the use of ointments or exfoliating treatments. Dr. Eric Treiber recommends the following treatments for hormonal acne breakouts.
- Retinoids: generally topical or oral medications. Retinoids are generally used to reduce noninflammatory and inflammatory lesions. However, Dr. Eric Treiber believes that their ability to unclog pores and reduce lesions can assist with hormonal acne.
- Antibiotics: Some antibiotics are specially designed to attack and inhibit the growth of hormonal acne. They treat larger, more severe acne irritations, and aid in the inflammation associated with hormonal acne.
- Birth control: For women, oral contraceptives can have a drastic effect on hormonal acne. They change hormone levels, and inhibit the circulation of androgen, minimizing the production of sebum.
